His thought was that if individuals had light to work by they could and would work longer hours. In his brain, rest was something that was not required and stood restricted to advance (Coren, 1996). ââ¬Å"Anything which will in general moderate work down is a waste. We are continually hearing individuals talk about ââ¬Ëloss of sleepââ¬â¢ as a catastrophe. They better call it loss of time, essentialness, and opportunity. â⬠- Thomas Edison Even incredible personalities, as Edisonââ¬â¢s, can not be right on occasion. A few specialists contend that had Edison invested more energy resting it would not have taken him in excess of 1000 endeavors to make his light. Examination has demonstrated that absence of rest can effectsly affect an individualââ¬â¢s physical wellbeing, emotional wellness, and profitability. The data introduced in this paper will address the significance of rest in human wellbeing, security, and efficiency. In the first place, some physical issues ascribed to lack of sleep will be examined. Next, mental issues connected to absence of lay down with be delineated with recorded cases. Ultimately, instances of blunders and debacles that have been attached to lack of sleep will be introduced. There are numerous physical issues that are connected to lack of sleep. Cardiovascular issues and more serious danger of death have been attached to absence of rest. The human body expects rest to reestablish and fix itself. At the point when the body doesn't get the rest it requires the results can be very appalling. Helpless rest has been appeared to expand the danger of hypertension, cardiovascular breakdown, stroke, and coronary failure. The human liver delivers a protein called ââ¬Å"C-receptive proteinâ⬠that is utilized by the body to help in light of aggravation, injury, or disease and is expelled by the body when the irritation, injury, or contamination is gone or mends. This protein ties to harmed cells, just as certain microorganisms, to help in expelling them from the body. This permits the body to recuperate. One examination demonstrated that over a time of five days during which a subject was denied rest, the C-responsive protein develops in blood at a consistent and noteworthy rate. Dozing permits the body time to process and evacuate these proteins. An expansion of these proteins can now and again lead to respiratory failure, stroke, or hypertension (Meier-Ewert , Ridker , Rifai, Regan, Price, Dinges and Mullington, 2004). The body can reestablish itself and recuperate when given somewhere in the range of six and eight hours of rest in a 24-hour time frame. While an individual dozes the invulnerable framework is attempting to reestablish and restore the body. At the point when the human body isn't allowed enough rest, the invulnerable framework can't completely finish the errand of dealing with and mending the body. Absence of rest can likewise cause the quantity of T-cells to decrease in the human body. White blood cells help in insusceptibility and help different cells in their capacities. Lower T-cell levels imply that the body is less ready to ward off disease, repress irritation, or mend a physical issue (Mann, 2010). At the point when the body can't recuperate itself, there is more serious danger of death. Lack of sleep can likewise prompt an expansion of stress, which has been connected to coronary illness, corpulence, wretchedness, gastrointestinal issues, just as mental heath issues. Permitting the body to rest and restore during rest guarantees that numerous physical issues related with the absence of rest can be stayed away from. Another way that absence of rest expands the opportunity of early passing is in car crashes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives a moderate gauge that 100,000 announced crashes for each year are an aftereffect of an exhausted driver (ââ¬Å"Facts and statsâ⬠2012). Dysfunctional behavior has likewise been connected to absence of rest. Issues going from helpless fixation, failure to center, memory misfortune, the presence of psychosis, and analyzed mental issue have been credited to lack of sleep. Before, analysts accepted that helpless rest was brought about by mental issues. Notwithstanding, late examination is demonstrating that an absence of rest is typically the impetus of mental issue. At the point when the human body needs to think or center when it has not had enough rest, it produces hormones adrenaline and cortisol trying to draw in and wake itself up. These hormones give the body a transient lift in vitality and they influence the body similarly that caffeine does. When the lift in vitality is done, the body frequently ââ¬Å"crashesâ⬠and an individual comes back to feeling tired; unfit to think or concentrate once more. These hormones, again like caffeine, regularly cause an individual to feel nervous of unsteady, which may obstruct fixation and core interest. These hormones have additionally been legitimately connected to build worry in the human body (Hart, 1985). Memory misfortune can likewise be an aftereffect of lack of sleep. Recollections are caught and reviewed in the mind by a three-advance procedure. The initial phase in making recollections is securing; where an individual has their first involvement in what will end up being the memory. The following is combination; which happens while an individual rests. In this stage a memory gets steady in a people cerebrum. Review, the last advance, is the capacity to get to the memory later on. Whenever the mind is denied the chance to settle a memory during rest, an individual is substantially less liable to hold the memory (Chang, 2011). Studies have additionally indicated that understudies who concentrate consistently and get a decent night rest before tests for the most part show improvement over understudies who ââ¬Å"cramâ⬠the prior night. The data that the understudy needs is better cemented in the mind and is prepared for review when the understudy needs to get to the data (Sifferlin, Augu). Indications of psychosis have additionally been legitimately attached to lack of sleep. In any event two archived cases, people who abandoned rest for expanded timeframes demonstrated manifestations like psychosis. In 1964 Randy Gardner endeavored to pick up passage into the Guiness Book of Work Records by remaining conscious for eleven days (264 hours). Gardner endured an extent of side effects. Days two through five discovered Gardner unfit to think, peevish, reluctant to help out others, and fantasizing. During days six through nine Gardnerââ¬â¢s discourse eased back, his crabbiness expanded, and he started to have slips in his memory. He regularly would start sentences without completing them and he experienced issues reviewing the names of basic articles. Distrustfulness started to set in on day ten. On day eleven, Gardnerââ¬â¢s discourse was slurred and without inflection. He appeared to be bland and must be urged to talk or react to somebody conversing with him (Ross, 1965). A comparative story is recounted Peter Tripp, a plate racer from New York. With an end goal to fund-raise for the March of Dimes, Tripp remained wakeful for 200 hours. He demonstrated a considerable lot of similar side effects that Gardner did. Trippââ¬â¢s involvement in lack of sleep finished with him confusing a specialist with a funeral director. He charged out of the stay with specialists following not far behind. Trippââ¬â¢s brain could no longer figure out what was genuine and what was not (Ross, 1965). With the guide of specialists, Randy Gardner had the option to recuperate totally from his crazy scene. He was observed while he rested and in the long run came back to typical rest designs and an ordinary perspective. Subside Tripp, nonetheless, experienced his self-perpetrated crazy break. For quite a while after his restless trick he felt that he was an impostor of himself and grumbled of migraines and enthusiastic shakiness. Absence of rest can likewise influence how individuals perform at their occupations. Standard and medicinal assignments are frequently influenced by an absence of rest. Basic blunders, for example, spelling, linguistic, numerical, or administrative mistakes are regularly made because of an absence of rest. These mistakes can either go unnoticed or can be adjusted without huge result. Increasingly critical mistakes are additionally credited to weariness. Somewhere in the range of 50,000 and 100,000 passings every year are brought about by preventable clinical blunders. Long moves for specialists, understudies, and attendants deny clinical experts rest required for them to work a highâ levels. The atomic mishap at Three Mile Island, the emergency at Chernobyl, the establishing of the Exxon Valdez, and the blast of room transport Challenger have all been connected to exhaustion (Harris, Horne, 2000). ââ¬Å"Sleep hardship is terrible for your cerebrum when you are attempting to do elevated level [thinking] undertakings. It might have genuine results both on execution and in transit your mind capacities. â⬠- J. Christian Gillin, M. D. (DeNoon, 2000) In research and in experience it has been demonstrated that absence of rest can effectsly affect an individualââ¬â¢s physical wellbeing, emotional well-being, and efficiency. A people physical wellbeing is influenced by lack of sleep by an expanded danger of death, cardiovascular issues, and issues with their invulnerable framework. A personââ¬â¢s psychological well-being experiences also an absence of rest. Memory misfortune, powerlessness to think or center, and even maniacal scenes have been followed to lack of sleep. Randy Gardner and Peter Tripp are prime instances of what befalls the mind when it abandons rest. Helpless employment execution and blunders extending from immaterial to calamitous have been connected to an absence of rest. The measure of rest required for every individual is extraordinary. Where a few people can work on next to no rest, others need numerous hours to completely reestablish and revive. References Coren, S. (1996). Both Lewis Carroll and H.G. Wells portray terrains of interest and puzzle. We follow Alice and Prendick into two unique universes where creatures talk, advancement is tried, and the truth is bowed until it about breaks. It is the geniuses of Lewis Carroll and H.G. Wells that take these universes of imagination and make them reasonable. How do these two incredible creators make the mind blowing acceptable? Both Alices Adventures in Wonderland and The Island of Dr. Moreau skim in the middle of a fantasy world and reality, which causes the genuine to appear to be inconceivable and the mind blowing appear to be genuine. Be that as it may, with a more inside and out inquiry, the grown-up peruser can discover Carroll may have without a doubt embedded a topic comparative with the disarray Alice experiences just as the peruser. In Alices Adventures in Wonderland, Carroll utilizes his adoration for youngsters and rationale as well as his semantic fun loving nature to make a story so as to show the mind of a kid. Also, Carroll ridicules the manner in which Victorian kids were raised. In the nineteenth century individuals were required to carry on as per a lot of rules and ethics. Carrolls illogical conduct of his characters can be viewed as ridiculing the manner in which kids had to act and their justification. Alices Adventures in Wonderland in general is repudiating the standard way childrens writing was composed. As should be obvious, the tale of Alice takes its peruser through a wide range of levels. With the adorable formation of a fantastical world, Carroll welcomes his perusers on an unreasonable yet natural excursion of the scrutinizing of personality by youngster longing to step into adulthood rashly, empowering him to engage while at the same time caricaturizing the Victorian Era. Alices Adventures in Wonderland starts with Alice sitting adjacent to her sister remarking, what is the utilization of a book without pictures or discussions Carroll 3. Alices thin perspective will currently start to bring basic inquiries up in her mind about what her identity is. Alice has arrived at the phase of advancement where the world seems reasonable and unambiguous where, incomprehensibly, interest is married to the oblivious confidence in the mental stability of things qtd. In Otten 50. Alices interest will continue to convey her on a total resurrection so as to scrutinize the unavoidable advance from youth to adulthood. Her can't help thinking that she is a remarkable youthful grown-up. This isn't such a new idea as it is very regular for a little youngster to need to carry on as a grown-up. Her excursion will sure enough test her conviction of what her identity is. This excursion starts when she wound up tumbling down an exceptionally profound well Carroll 5. By tumbling down this opening, Alice is going about as a dad. In winding up in a sorry situation of the well she has proceeded onward to the fetal stage. The primary issue Alice experiences is figuring out how to fit through the little entryway so little that she was unable to try and fit her head through the entryway. She before long discover a jug named drink me. The shrewd little Alice was not going to do that in a rush At this point, Alice is as yet carrying on the manner in which a legitimate Victorian kid would behave in the Victorian time frame. She should figure out how to leave the belly she is in so she can scrutinize the world she exists in. Along these lines, she bargains to drink whats in the container making her shrivel. This is the start of what the peruser will see as Alices method of scrutinizing her personality. Hemingway Fathers And Sons EssayOne of the various standards which administered an appropriate Victorian ladys conduct was against cutting. Alice experiences this standard at the banquet given for her when she turns into a sovereign in Through the Looking Glass4. Obviously, Carroll is making jokes about manners here both through the punning of the term to cut just as the strange bowing of the leg of sheep. The Lobster Quadrille that Alice experiences in Alices Adventures in Wonderland is a spoof of the quadrille, a move that was utilized to open about each trendy ball at the time that the book was composed and distributed. The Mock Turtle and Griffins frantic frolic can scarcely be related to the affableness the first move had5. Consequently, again Carroll calls attention to the idiocy of a social convention. Another point Carroll makes is that Victorian kids were relied upon to carry on consistently. At the point when Alice is at the preliminary of the Knave of Hearts, Carroll spoofs this kind of rule and the normal conduct by having Alice disrespect the King6. Only permitting Alice to scrutinize the authority of the King and point out the idiocy of his guidelines he is calling attention to the ineptitude of contemporary principles set when, in any case represented as the King. These situations maybe represent the creators sad battle in his own journey to battle between the effortlessness of youth and the phase in adulthood in which one understands the genuine turbulent and strange way of life Chang 1. All the more in this way, the preposterousness of the Victorian Era is similar to that of Wonderland. Alices Adventures in Wonderland is one of the universes most interpreted books, and Carroll positions among one of the most cited writers. The characters he made have lived in the minds of his crowd. Lewis Carroll has customarily been portrayed as the ace of gibberish. In spite of the fact that this is valid, Carrolls comical inclination has been demonstrated that it was not simply to engage. The manifestations of a large number of his sonnets and books are the consequences of the battles he looked for a mind-blowing duration. His fuse of rationale and riddles, plays on words, rules and rebellion expand the central matter of his accounts. In this manner, a solitary understanding of Alices Adventures in Wonderland is the fight between spanning from adolescence to adulthood. With a basic diagram, Carroll really satisfied that work in his compositions. He appears to draw out the creative mind and youth in the entirety of his perusers. It is clear Carroll additionally found the principles and commitments of the time were strange as he parodies them all through the vast majority of his works. Along these lines, the Alice books have furnished the world with a limitless fantasy which has accomplished an immaculateness that is practically one of a kind in a period so jumbled and cumbered qtd. In Kelly 141. As of April 1999, doctors helped self destruction is unlawful in everything except a few states. More than thirty states have set up laws precluding helped self destruction, and of the individuals who dont have sculptures, various them deny it through customary law. In Michigan, Jack Kevorkian was at first accused of damaging the state sculpture. He was accused of first-degree murder and conveying a controlled substance without a permit. The helped self destruction charge was dropped, nonetheless, he was in the long run indicted for second-degree murder and conveying a controlled substance without a permit. Just one state, Oregon, has legitimized helped self destruction. The Oregon law, which became effective in October 1997, gives that a specialist may endorse, yet not direct, a deadly portion of drug to a patient who has under a half year to live. As of April 1999, 23 patients were given the medications under the sculpture, and 15 of them utilized the medications to end it all. A report discharged by the Oregon State Health Division found that the law was functioning admirably and had not been liable to mishandle (REED A9). The word Euthanasia started from the Greek language: eu implies great and thanatos implies demise. The term willful extermination typically implies that the individual who wishes to end it all must start the demonstration (WORLD BOOK). Be that as it may, a few people characterize killing to incorporate both willful and automatic end of life. Killing has numerous implications so it is essential to separate among the enigmatically related terms. These implications of terms were refered to from George Lundberg, M.D. in Views of Assisted self destruction. Automatic Euthanasia: This term is utilized by some to depict the executing of an individual contrary to their desires. It is fundamentally a type of homicide and not a famous view among the vast majority... <! Then once we get through the facts and figures, we can focus on how to get into Duke, and what your best path to admission will look like. Applying to Duke? Thinking about making Duke University your home for the next four years? Makes senseDuke is a great school! Here are some of the basics: Duke is located in Durham, North Carolina. Its history goes back to 1838. Today, Duke currently offers fifty majors and fifty-two minors to its undergraduate class, which is divided between the Trinity College of Arts Sciences, and the Pratt School of Engineering. And what a class it is! For the Class of 2022, only 8.6% of applicants were accepted. How to Get Into Duke Duke is an extremely selective schoolthis year Duke received 37,330 applications, which is an 8% increase in applications comparable to that of its ivy league peers like Harvard and Yale. Admission into Duke isnââ¬â¢t for your average student. The Duke admissions committee carefully sifts through thousands of undergrad applications each year, so youre going to be competing with the cream of the crop. Most students who get into Duke will check off most of these bullet points: Youre basically at the top of your class. Your extracurricular activities demonstrate your leadership and initiative. Your background or point of view stands out in a pile of applications. Your SAT/ACT scores and GPA are exceptional. Obviously, not all of these factors are under your control but several of them can be! Starting with your test scores. Duke SAT Scores Every year, Duke releases demographic information and interesting facts about its incoming freshman class. While the Duke admissions details of the Class of 2023 have not yet been made publicly available, the 2022 freshman profile still has a lot of relevant information about whos currently attending Duke and where they have been scoring. Here are the Duke SAT scores of the Class of 2022: Duke SAT Scores - 25th PercentileDuke SAT Scores - 50th PercentileDuke SAT Scores - 75th Percentile 149015201560 As you can see, there isnââ¬â¢t one super-special, specific Duke SAT score that the Duke admissions committee is looking for. But, you can also see that the 75th percentile of incoming freshman scored 1560 or the new SAT. Its generally a good idea to aim for the 75th percentile of whatever school youre applying toso in this case youd want to set your goal score around 780 for each section. Thats pretty high! So you better get studying! Duke ACT Scores Maybe youve taken our SAT or ACT quiz, and you think the ACT might be a better fit for you. Dont worry, weve got those statistics too! Duke ACT Scores 25th PercentileDuke ACT Scores 50th PercentileDuke ACT Scores 75th Percentile 333435 For students who submitted ACT scores and were admitted to Duke in 2017, the 75th percentile of the incoming freshman class scored a 35 on the ACT. Again, thats for both the Engineering School and the College of Arts Sciences. So no matter which school youre applying to, try to aim for a 35, and definitely make sure not to go below a 33. Duke GPA Average Duke actually doesnt officially report the GPAs of its admitted studentsbut based on data from more than 1,000 schools, the average GPA of a freshman at Duke is 4.17. As you may already know, lots of high schools use a weighted GPA out of 4.0. So to be averaging a 4.17 youd have to be taking plenty of AP or IB classes (and racking up those As across the board)! Duke doesnt set a minimum GPA, nor do they re-weight GPAââ¬â¢s to any standard other than what a school provides. Every school and every grading system is different, but dont worry too much about that. The Duke admissions committee will do their best to evaluate your scores fairly, no matter where you went to high school! Duke Acceptance Rate As we mentioned at the beginning of this post, the Duke admissions rate for the Class of 2021 was 8.6%. But theres obviously more too it than thatout of 37,330 applicants, 3,219 were admittedwho are these people?! Wellthis is probably a good time for the Freshman Profile! Duke Freshmen Profile (2018-2019) You want to know whos getting into Duke. Luckily, Duke keeps track of that sort of thing. Lets take a look: Duke 2022 Freshman Profile Total Applicants 37,330 Total Accepted3,219 Total Enrolled1,740 Admissions Rate8.6% Early Decision Admissions Rate21.6% Regular Decision Admissions Rate7.0% Asian, Asian-American, Pacific Islander28% Black/African American10% Hispanic/Latino11% Native American, American Indian, Native Alaskan, or Native Hawaiian2% Male48% Female52% Went to Public High School65% Went to Private High School31% Went to Religious High School / Military High School / Homeschooled / Other4% First-Generation College Student 9% International Students11.5% Shining in Other Areas Weve looked at test scores, GPA, and the demographics of Dukes current freshman classso you have some idea of how you stack up. You may not be able to go back in time and change your grades from freshman year, but there are also other things you have a bit more control over: letters of recommendation and admissions essays. For the former, pick a teacher that knows you well and write them a note explaining why you think youââ¬â¢d be great at Duke. Also, donââ¬â¢t forget a stamped envelopes if your teacher wants to send their letter the old-fashioned way (though fewer and fewer schools accept actual letters these days!). Trust me, you donââ¬â¢t want to make Mr. Davis cover your postage. As for admissions essays, this is your only real chance to introduce yourself, so use it wisely. Definitely have friends, family, and others take a look before you send it in! Wondering how to shine in a Duke Admissions essay? Mike M. from Transizion has got the scoop: Duke is a large school with many different colleges and majors. Going there is a great way to become a little fish in a big pond regardless of your high school experience. While that may not seem like a good thing, it does offer you an opportunity to help yourself stand out amongst your peers. The best way to do that is to focus your application at specific educational goals. Learn about the school that you will be attending, and hone in on what you drew you in, and why you think you would be a great fit. Avoid being overly general with your statements. Dont say something like, I want to go to Duke because I love basketball, or I always dreamed of getting my education on the East Coast. These statements dont really say much about your educational aspirations, or who you really are as a student. Final Thoughts Whether or not you achieve that perfect test score, a well-manicured application package can still result in a ââ¬Ëfat envelopeââ¬â¢ from Duke University. Good luckhopefully soon youll have access to all the North Carolina barbecue your heart desires. The closer and more tightly bound an electron is to the nucleus, the more difficult it will be to remove, and the higher its ionization energy will be. Key Takeaways: Ionization Energy Ionization energy is the amount of energy needed to completely remove an electron from a gaseous atom.Generally, the first ionization energy is lower than that required to remove subsequent electrons. There are exceptions.Ionization energy exhibits a trend on the periodic table. Ionization energy generally increases moving from left to right across a period or row and decreases moving top to bottom down an element group or column. Units for Ionization Energy Ionization energy is measured in electronvolts (eV). Sometimes the molar ionization energy is expressed, in J/mol. First vs Subsequent Ionization Energies The first ionization energy is the energy required to remove one electron from the parent atom. The second ionization energy is the energy required to remove a second valence electron from the univalent ion to form the divalent ion, and so on. Successive ionization energies increase. The second ionization energy is (almost) always greater than the first ionization energy. There are a couple of exceptions. The first ionization energy of boron is smaller than that of beryllium. The first ionization energy of oxygen is greater than that of nitrogen. The reason for the exceptions has to do with their electron configurations. In beryllium, the first electron comes from a 2s orbital, which can hold two electrons as is stable with one. In boron, the first electron is removed from a 2p orbital, which is stable when it holds three or six electrons. Both of the electrons removed to ionize oxygen and nitrogen come from the 2p orbital, but a nitrogen atom has three electrons in its p orbital (stable), while an oxygen atom has 4 electrons in the 2p orbital (less stable). Ionization Energy Trends in the Periodic Table Ionization energies increase moving from left to right across a period (decreasing atomic radius). Ionization energy decreases moving down a group (increasing atomic radius). Group I elements have low ionization energies because the loss of an electron forms a stable octet. It becomes harder to remove an electron as the atomic radius decreases because the electrons are generally closer to the nucleus, which is also more positively charged. The highest ionization energy value in a period is that of its noble gas. Terms Related to Ionization Energy The phrase ionization energy is used when discussing atoms or molecules in the gas phase. There are analogous terms for other systems. Work Function - The work function is the minimum energy needed to remove an electron from the surface of a solid. Electron Binding Energy - The electron binding energy is a more generic term for ionization energy of any chemical species. Its often used to compare energy values needed to remove electrons from neutral atoms, atomic ions, and polyatomic ions. Ionization Energy Versus Electron Affinity Another trend seen in the periodic table is electron affinity. Electron affinity is a measure of the energy released when a neutral atom in the gas phase gains an electron and forms a negatively charged ion (anion). While ionization energies may be measured with great precision, electron affinities are not as easy to measure. The trend to gain an electron increases moving from left to right across a period in the periodic table and decreases moving from top to bottom down an element group. The reasons electron affinity typically becomes smaller moving down the table is because each new period adds a new electron orbital. The valence electron spends more time further from the nucleus. Also, as you move down the periodic table, an atom has more electrons. Repulsion between the electrons makes it easier to remove an electron or harder to add one. Electron affinities are smaller values than ionization energies. This puts the trend in electron affinity moving across a period into perspective. Rather than a net release of energy when an electron is gain, a stable atom like helium actually requires energy to force ionization. A halogen, like fluorine, readily accepts another electron. Nazism was escalating and there were whispers of another ââ¬ËGreat Warââ¬â¢ on the horizon. The Dutch people were holding on to the hope that their neutrality would be honored as it was after the last ââ¬ËGreat Warââ¬â¢. Although, this was not to be the case, this day was a day of celebration and honor. The ten Booms were a well-respected family that lived in the Dutch city of Haarlem, as their fathers had before them. The family operated a small watch shop from the first floor of their home on Bartheljorisstraat Street. Their home, known locally as the Beje, had been in their family for generations. The family had gathered to celebrate the hundred year anniversary of opening the watch shop. Even before the war, the family had raised eleven foster children in a Christian home with morals, values and integrity (21). As it was to unfold, the ten Booms became increasingly involved in the underground movement in an attempt to save Jews from Hitlerââ¬â¢s cruel eugenics movement. Pickwick assisted the ten Booms to find places of hiding from the Nazi death camps, food cards to sustain them, and aided in the set-up of alarms and security around the house. The ten Booms didnââ¬â¢t begrudge the Jews their religion, though different from their own. They embraced it and merely did the right thing. However, on February 28, 1944, the ten Boom family was betrayed and the Beje was raided. The six people in hiding were able to escape into the upstairs hiding space in time due to all of the practice drills, alarms and such to ensure their safety. However, the ten Boom family members were caught and taken in for interrogation by the Nazis. Corrie, Casper, Willem, Betsie, Nollie, and her husband Peter van Woerden were then imprisoned during this Gestapo raid on the Beje. The six family members were transferred from the Haarlem jail to the Scheveningen prison. From there, Corrie and Betsie are transported by train to the Vught Concentration Camp. Metonymy is also the rhetorical strategy of describing something indirectly by referring to things around it, as in describing someones clothing to characterize the individual. Adjective: metonymic. A variant of metonymy is synecdoche. Etymology: From the Greek, change of name Examples and Observations In a corner, a cluster of lab coats made lunch plans.(Karen Green, Bough Down. Siglio, 2013)Many standard items of vocabulary are metonymic. A red-letter day is important, like the feast days marked in red on church calendars. . . . On the level of slang, a redneck is a stereotypical member of the white rural working class in the Southern U.S., originally a reference to necks sunburned from working in the fields.(Connie Eble, Metonymy. The Oxford Companion to the English Language, 1992)In Stockholm, Sweden, where Obama was traveling on Wednesday, the White House praised the vote and said that it would continue to seek support for a military response(David Espo, Obama Wins Backing From Senate Panel on Syria Strike. Associated Press, September 5, 2013)Whitehall prepares for a hung parliament.(The Guardian, January 1, 2009)Fear gives wings.(Romanian proverb)He used the events to show the Silicon Valley crowd that he was just like them--and that he understood their financial needs better than the suits on Wall Street.(Businessweek, 2003)I stopped at a bar and had a couple of double Scotches. They didnt do me any good. All they did was make me think of Silver Wig, and I never saw her again.(Raymond Chandler, The Big Sleep) Using Part of an Expression for the Whole One of the favorite American metonymic processes is the one in which a part of a longer expression is used to stand for the whole expression. Here are some examples of the part of an expression for the whole expression metonymy in American English: Danish for Danish pastryshocks for shock absorberswallets for wallet-sized photosRidgemont High for Ridgemont High Schoolthe States for the United States (Zoltà ¡n Kà ¶vecses, American English: An Introduction. Broadview, 2000) The Real World and the Metonymic World [I]n the case of metonymy, . . . one object stands for another. For example, understanding the sentence The ham sandwich left a big tip. Involves identifying the ham sandwich with the thing he or she ate and setting up a domain in which the ham sandwich refers to the person. This domain is separate from the real world, in which the phrase ham sandwich refers to a ham sandwich. The distinction between the real world and the metonymic world can be seen in the sentence: The waitress spoke to the complaining ham sandwich and then she took it away. This sentence does not make sense; it uses the phrase ham sandwich to refer both to the person (in the metonymic world) and a ham sandwich (in the real world). (Arthur B. Markman, Knowledge Representation. Lawrence Erlbaum, 1999) Going to Bed The following trivial metonymic [utterance] may serve as an illustration of an idealized cognitive model: (1) Lets go to bed now. Going to bed is typically understood metonymically in the sense of going to sleep. This metonymic target forms part of an idealized script in our culture: when I want to sleep, I first go to bed before I lie down and fall asleep. Our knowledge of this sequence of acts is exploited in metonymy: in referring to the initial act we evoke the whole sequence of acts, in particular the central act of sleeping. (Gà ¼nter Radden, The Ubiquity of Metonymy. Cognitive and Discourse Approaches to Metaphor and Metonymy, ed. by Josà © Luis Otal Campo, Ignasi Navarro i Ferrando, and Begoà ±a Bellà ©s Fortuà ±o. Universitat Jaume, 2005) Metonymy in Cigarette Advertising Metonymy is common in cigarette advertising in countries where legislation prohibits depictions of the cigarettes themselves or of people using them. (Daniel Chandler, Semiotics. Routledge, 2007)Metonymic ads often feature a specific product attribute: Benson Hedges the gold cigarette box, Silk Cut the use of purple, Marlboro the use of red . . .. (Sean Brierley, The Advertising Handbook. Routledge, 1995)As a form of association, metonymy is particularly powerful in making arguments. It not only links two disparate signs but makes an implicit argument about their similarities. . . . One of the most famous cigarette slogans was developed by Sigmund Freuds nephew, Edward Bernays who, in creating the phrase Youve come a long way, baby! hoped to expunge the hussy label from women who smoked publicly by referring to cigarettes as torches of freedom. This was one of the early examples of an advertising slogan that relied on social context to be imbued with meaning. As with most good meto nyms, this image was linked with a cultural referent that aided in the persuasion. (Jonathan W. Rose, Making Pictures in Our Heads: Government Advertising in Canada. Greenwood, 2000) The Difference Between Metaphor and Metonymy Metaphor creates the relation between its objects, while metonymy presupposes that relation. (Hugh Bredin, Metonymy. Poetics Today, 1984)Metonymy and metaphor also have fundamentally different functions. Metonymy is about referring: a method of naming or identifying something by mentioning something else which is a component part or symbolically linked. In contrast, a metaphor is about understanding and interpretation: it is a means to understand or explain one phenomenon by describing it in terms of another. (Murray Knowles and Rosamund Moon, Introducing Metaphor. Routledge, 2006)If metaphor works by transposing qualities from one plane of reality to another, metonymy works by associating meanings within the same plane. . . . The representation of reality inevitably involves a metonym: we choose a part of reality to stand for the whole. The urban settings of television crime serials are metonymsââ¬âa photographed street is not meant to stand for the street itself, but as a meton ym of a particular type of city life--inner-city squalor, suburban respectability, or city-centre sophistication. (John Fiske, Introduction to Communication Studies, 2nd ed. Routledge, 1992) The Difference Between Metonymy and Synecdoche Metonymy resembles and is sometimes confused with the trope of synecdoche. While likewise based on a principle of contiguity, synecdoche occurs when a part is used to represent a whole or a whole to represent a part, as when workers are referred to as hands or when a national football team is signified by reference to the nation to which it belongs: England beat Sweden. As way of example, the saying that The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world illustrates the difference between metonymy and synecdoche. Here, the hand is a synecdochic representation of the mother of whom it is a part, while the cradle represents a child by close association. (Nina Norgaard, Beatrix Busse, and Rocà o Montoro, Key Terms in Stylistics. Continuum, 2010) Semantic Metonymy An oft-cited example of metonymy is the noun tongue, which designates not only a human organ but also a human capacity in which the organ plays a conspicuous part. Another noted example is the change of orange from the name of a fruit to the color of that fruit. Since orange refers to all instances of the color, this change also includes generalization. A third example (Bolinger, 1971) is the verb want, which once meant lack and changed to the contiguous sense of desire. In these examples, both senses still survive. Such examples are established; where several meanings survive, we have semantic metonymy: the meanings are related and also independent of each other. Orange is a polysemic word, its two distinct and nondependent meanings metonymically related. (Charles Ruhl, On Monosemy: A Study in Linguistic Semantics. SUNY Press, 1989) Discourse-Pragmatic Functions of Metonymy One of the most important discourse-pragmatic functions of metonymy is to enhance cohesion and coherence of the utterance. It is something that is already at the very heart of metonymy as a conceptual operation where one content stands for another but both are actively activated at least to some degree. In other words, metonymy is an efficient way of saying two things for the price of one, i.e. two concepts are activated while only one is explicitly mentioned (cf. Radden Kà ¶vecses 1999:19). This necessarily enhances the cohesion of an utterance because two topical concepts are referred to by means of one label, and there is consequently, at least nominally, less shifting or switching between these two topics. (Mario Brdar and Rita Brdar-Szabà ³, The (Non-)Metonymic Uses of Place Names in English, German, Hungarian, and Croatian. Metonymy and Metaphor in Grammar, ed. by Klaus-Uwe Panther, Linda L. Now which of these should ring most important in a person s mind? Should the impressive and achieving student be looked down upon because of how she entered the United States? The idea that every illegal alien that enters America is carrying a weapon or is out to kill must be abolished. Most entering the United States are primarily seeking improved conditions for themselves and their families. This is why a border wall should not be constructed. The construction of a border wall or fence would be unconstitutional, prejudiced and would only provide harm for the nations environment and economy and create vast inequality and injustice for all. While there is a slight possibility that one in a million illegal aliens entering the United States has a bomb strapped to his or her chest, should all of the men, women and children seeking safety and security be turned away? Many already believe that Donald Trump is a modern-day Hitler (4?) but the construction of a ginormous wall along the US/Mexico border would shape america into an unwelcoming, racist, and an adversary to many across the globe. Submissive housewives and proper ladies were the expectations set for women in the time To Kill A Mockingbird took place. Scout Finch lived in a household that had a strong male influence; aside from Calpurnia, she had no real present example of what she was supposed to become. Because of this, Scout refused to conform to the ways of the rest of the women in Maycomb and the world (Lee 84). Scoutââ¬â¢s behavior bothered Alexandra so much that she came to live with them, wh ich made me wary of her character. Alexandra was raised a lady, and she valued the domestic roles expected of women. Her (and everyone elses) narrow-mindedness led her to believe that the only thing girls could and should do, was be a lady. ââ¬Å"Aunt Alexandra was fanatical on the subject of my attire. I could not possibly hope to be a lady if I wore breeches; when I said I could do nothing in a dress, she said I wasnt supposed to be doing things that required pants.â⬠At this point, I completely hated Alexandraââ¬â¢s character. However, Scout was not the only girl to fall victim to these expectations; all women of this time were pressured to be something that they were not (Lee 85-86). If prostitution is decriminalized it will become economically profitable and feasible for not only the prostitutes, but also western society as a whole. Without the 20th century western laws, which force prostitution underground, the profession of prostitution could become a clean and safe occupation. Prostitution laws are unconstitutional and deny the prostitutes what the American constitution allows them. Prostitution is an illegal act in Canada and large portions of the United States which, if legalized, would protect and benefit 20th century western society. If sanctioned, prostitution will become economically lucrative for the governments involved. The colossal amount of money spent each year on prostitute prevention could be spent on more urgent issues, which is exactly what the San Francisco Task Force on Prostitution found. The total costs accounted for in this report amounts to $7,634,750.00. Given the many areas in which we found that information is not available, or there are hidden costs, the over all expense to the taxpayer exceeds $7.6 million annually. 1 The San Francisco Task Force is a group of researchers, police officers, members of the San Francisco community, government officials and prostitutes, who frequently meet to discuss the issues of prostitution and to try to come to some solution. Although they may not always agree, two issues they are in agreement about are that the $7.6 million dollars would be better spent elsewhere and that prostitution should be legalized.. Robert Noce of Manitoba city council wants reform of the Canadian Justice System and he would like to see prostitution become worthwhile to Canadian taxpayers. Quite frankly, for anyone to suggest to me a dating or escort agency is just offering companionship is being quite naive. Lets not try to bury our heads in the sand and pretend nothing else is going on. Instead of pretending these establishments dont exist lets instead be logical about this and try to use the profits that we could be making, in a wise and useful manner. I think that the highest paying customers for prostitution is us Canadians, in the money we put into fighting this futile cause.2 Instead of putting millions of dollars into stopping this consensual act, the money saved and made from the legalization of prostitution can be spent on fighting child prostitution and coerced prostitution. These two crimes are becoming rampant across North America, but lack of funds prevents a serious effort from being made to fight against them. If brothels and prostitutes were to be taxed like any other place of business, millions of extra revenue dollars would become available to the Canadian government, for it to spend as it sees fit. Although the monetary concerns are overwhelming one of the most debated issues is the health and safety of prostitution. If prostitution were to be decriminalized, the profession of prostitution could become a healthy, publicly sanctioned place of business. Throughout history and throughout European cultures, prostitution has been legalized to decrease the spread of disease as historian Jennifer James reports. Beginning with Prussia in 1700, most continental European governments shifted their tactics from suppression of prostitution and sexually transmitted disease to control through a system of compulsory registration, licensed brothels, and medical inspection of prostitutes. Although medical techniques were primitive there was a noticeable decline in sexual diseases among prostitutes and their clients.3 European governments hundreds of years ago realized that since they could not fight prostitution, it was best to make it as safe and healthy as they could. Their efforts saved hundreds of lives and provided treatment to the prostitutes who previously could not seek medical attention without being arrested. A recent episode of 20/20 interviewed Joe McNamara, former police chief of Kansas and San Jose, and vice squad officers as they discussed the physical harm that anti-prostitution laws inflict JOE MCNAMARA: What were doing now is worse than prostitution. JOHN STOSSEL: The law makes it worse? JOE MCNAMARA: The law makes it a lot worse. It drives up the profits. It drives up the potential for corruption. He is an Italian immigrant that moved illegally to the United States with his brother Rodolpho to work as longshoremen, since at the time (the play was written in 1955) his country of origin, Italy, was going through a major economic depression because of the outcome of World War II. In the play, we are told that Marcos plan is to make enough money to survive and be able to send some of that money to his wife and his three kids back in Italy, who are starving. Marco physically resembles the Sicilian stereotype, with dark skin and dark hair. He is also very strong and he could easily load the whole ship by himself.(pg.541) In this play, the author uses plot, dialog, actions and symbolism to emphasize Marcos honor which, in my opinion, is his prominent characteristic. O red fruit, ivory, fine timbers! This loafs big with its yeasty rising. Moneys new-minted in this fat purse. Im a means, a stage, a cow in calf. Ive eaten a bag of green apples, Boarded the train theres no getting off. Sylviaââ¬â¢s Plathââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Metaphorsâ⬠is about a woman feeling insignificant during the midst of her pregnancy. Striking imagery is used to explore the narratorââ¬â¢s attitudes about having a child. Plath uses metaphors in every line, including the title itself, making the poem a collection of clues. The reader is teasingly challenged to figure out these clues, realising that the metaphors have much deeper meaning. The very first line of ââ¬ËMetaphorsââ¬â¢ give readers an introduction to the poem, stating that it is a riddle to be solved. We will write a custom essay sample on Sylvia Plaths Metaphor or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Riddles are not easily figured out and need careful consideration to find the meaning. However when solved, it seems the solution of the riddle is a pregnant woman. Plath uses 9 lines for the nine months of pregnancy by describing herself as nine syllables. The title ââ¬ËMetaphorsââ¬â¢ also has nine letters, adding to this effect. In the next 2 lines, the poem continues to use inventive metaphors to compare the narrator to different objects, creating imagery. In line 2, the narrator is ââ¬Å"An elephant, a ponderous house. â⬠This expresses how the narrator feels about her pregnant body, signifying largeness. Similarly, the third line pokes fun of the way she looks by putting a funny image in ones mind of a pregnant woman that resembles ââ¬Å"A melon strolling on two tendrils. â⬠The objects in line 4 (red fruit, ivory and fine timbers) all refer to previous metaphors addressed. The red fruit refers to the melon and a fruit represents reproduction or a womb. When a plant is grown, the plantââ¬â¢s worth is in its fruit. Plath refers to her baby as the fruit and true value while she is the carrier, much like a plant. The next part of line 4 is the ivory. Once again, an elephant is killed for its prized ivory tusks which are valued and esteemed. This strong metaphor compares the narrator to the elephant who feels their fate is death. The third part of line 4 is the fine timbers that directly relate to the house previously mentioned. The purpose of the house fortifies the idea that whatââ¬â¢s inside is of value. The house is nothing without its fine timbers and it is merely for protection and shelter. Just like a pregnant woman is for her unborn child. The fifth line represents the rising loaf like a child growing inside a womb. It is a pun on a familiar saying to pregnancy of a bun in the oven. ââ¬Å"Moneyââ¬â¢s new minted in this fat purseâ⬠plays with the idea that the purse has no great value in itself but contains valuable things inside. Line 7 explores the narratorââ¬â¢s feelings towards having a child. She feels like ââ¬Å"a meansâ⬠, as if she is just a way for the baby to be born. As a mother she is just ââ¬Å"a stageâ⬠and a platform but not a performance. She is ââ¬Å"a cow in calf,â⬠where many cows are separated from their offspring and have little to do with their mum. The final lines seem to break away from the rest of the poem and have a tone of darkness. After eating ââ¬Å"a bag of green applesâ⬠one might feel sick especially since green apples are considered sour. The fruit is also unripe, signifying that the narrator is not ready to have a baby. Another point that can be found is that it is easy to see the resemblance of this line and Eve from the Bible. Eve was tempted to eat an apple and was cursed with the pain of childbirth. Likewise, the narrator has eaten a bag of apples and is also cursed with bearing a baby. This sense of helplessness is particularly shown in the last line. There is no way out for her. She has ââ¬Å"boarded the trainâ⬠which she does not feel prepared for and nothing will stop the train until it arrives at its destination and the baby is delivered. It signifies the lack of control that she has over her own body. Early in 2013, Congress averted a plunge off the fiscal cliff, and extended emergency unemployment benefits and mortgage debt forgiveness. Remaining unresolved are several critical fiscal issues: the federal budget; sequestration; and how to come to grips with the debt ceiling.â⬠(Top Trends in 2013: A review of the major issues that will affect business and shape corporate strategy this year). This is manifested in the entire United States because this added to our economical deficit and made it difficult to obtain subprime loans for mortgages for those with less than perfect credit who can afford to pay a mortgage. The instrument I chose is the ones that allow internalization of environmental costs which are directly related to adding to the unemployment and derating the mortgage loans last year. The problem with economic instruments is one is not adherable to the other or one size does not fit all. It is sometimes easier to implement through commands and regulations. ââ¬Å"However, in many developing countries the inspection and enforcement resources are limited and political influences may lead to inequitable compliance requirements. In such cases, economic instruments may be designed for the achievement of more modest standards of performance rather than super-performanceâ⬠(Economic Instruments). President Obama did a great thing by adding to the national time to draw unemployment for those actively seeking employment in this depression we are currently in but he should not have forgiven all mortgages. People need to realize their mortgage needs to be paid first before their car note, credit cards, or other situations. Everyone needs a roof over their head and defaulting on mortgages is not the way to go. Relevance of Kidney Disease in Children with Lupus Introduction Systematic Lupus erythematosus (SLE), or Lupus, in its simple term, is a chronic autoimmune disease. Autoimmune disease is an illness that occur when the bodyââ¬â¢s immune system becomes hyperactive and functions abnormally by attacking various normal and healthy tissues of the body. The bodyââ¬â¢s immune system is designed to fight bacterial agents and other foreign microbes, or antigens, that entered into human body. Under normal function, the bodyââ¬â¢s immune system produces antibodies that are made up of proteins to protect and fight the antigens such as viruses and bacteria. In lupus patients, the immune system produce abnormal antibodies in their blood. With abnormal antibodies, immune system is now unable to distinguish healthy tissues from antigens, th erefore the immune system will direct the antibodies against healthy tissues rather than the foreign infectious agents or antigens, causing swelling, pain, and damage to body tissues and organs such as skin, kidneys, blood, heart and lungs (Shiel & Stoppler, n.d.) . But how come kidneys are complicatedly affected? The normal function of kidneys are to remove waste materials from the human like creatinine and urea from the blood. Creatine is a subset of protein, wherein antibodies are also made up of protein. If the blood contains high levels of creatinine and urea, kidney weaken its function. Thatââ¬â¢s why if blood or protein in the urine is found during a urine test, it is a sign of kidney damage. Since immunity system of a lupus patient abnormally produce antibodies that are made up of protein, high level of it inside the body, especially in the blood will tend to a kidney failure. So, presumably children with lupus might develop kidney failure. Literature Review: According to research conducted by John Hopkins Childrenââ¬â¢s Center (2010), that in more than 98,000 children and adults with different kinds of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), those with lupus, Systematic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), have a more lethal form of kidney disease. Researchers analyzed data specifically reports that ââ¬Å"children with lupus kidney disease had more than twice (2.4 times) the risk of dying compared to children with other forms of kidney diseaseâ⬠(para.5). Research analysis was based on 98,483 ESKD patients, wherein 171 of them were children with lupus, with the record of 29 fatalities, while in non-lupus ESKD, among 3,276 children 316 died. The reported common cause of death was heart disease due to complication. Also, according to their research analysis, that among children with lupus, eighty percent suffer kidney disease, commonly called Lupus Nephritis, and with the recorded number of deaths seventy-five percent died of heart failure, mostly heart atta ck. Base on this statistical report seriously speaking, lupus and kidney disease is a deadly combination. Research analysis shows that the vital organs that are commonly and primarily affected by lupus are heart and kidneys. How does lupus affect our kidneys? Dr. Carl F. Anderson (2010) explained first how lupus manifest in one human body. Being an autoimmune disease, as I explained in my introduction, the bodyââ¬â¢s immune system mistakenly recognized our own tissue as pathogens. The text was quite interesting, which provoked my decision of choosing it. The text talks about the free will and the truth of determinism. Many occasions human beings find themselves in agony when they are making decisions. The text gave me an insight of understanding that there are provoking factor when human being making choices in life and the decision that they make are sometimes determined by other occurrences. Since before I took this course and read a text about the free will and determinism. I had a thought that we human beings being the superior creatures in the beautiful world we are at liberty to choose to undertake what we wish to. This notion was erased by the knowledge that I got from the text about the Holbach and Taylor on determinism/free will (Holton 415). This reality was quite impressing to me that it motivated me to write about it from my primary course. When I first read the above text, my initial thoughts were diverse. First, I thought that if all human being were considerate and humane enough then it will be of no essence to have rules and regulations governing them. Since if one does everything while back in mind having the idea of the probable consequences to him or her also to the surrounding. Secondly, the other thought that I had was that if people were always driven by necessity. When they are in a position to recognize it, then they would not have been pushed into doing what they are expected of them. For instance, we as students recognize what we are expected to achieve in this course, and then would not have waited up to when we are given assignment to do it. If necessity were a guiding principle, then we could have done the assignment earlier and achieve what our course is set to give us. Finally, the last thought that I had was that if all humankind were conservative enough to the others as they are to themselves.
